HINERUA HUT

HINERUA HUT PICTURED IN 2012
In late February, the BCT sent local builder, Joe Eagles, and his team of two into Hinerua Hut. This job was funded using Kaimahi for Nature (KFN), a programme designed to keep people in work on jobs involving our conservation estate and its care.

Situated near the junction of Broken Ridge and Hinerua Ridge, the hut has a fine position in the eastern flanks of the Ruahine mountains.

NEW ROOF AND CHIMNEY
Hinerua Hut is an old classic 4-bunker NZFS hut, built back in 1960, and upgraded by the Central Hawke’s Bay Shooter's Club in 1993. It serves as a neat little base for hunting, and a well-deserved stopover on a tramping trip, or a good solid return day trip.
In between the infamous Ruahine ‘showers’, Joe and his team installed a new Wagner Cooktop fire, a new roof, and a new woodshed (made from the old roofing iron ... waste not want not!).

They also did some other minor maintenance to keep the hut in tip-top shape for the next few years. Located at 1000 metres, Hinerua gets it fair share of snow during the winter, and the new woodburner insures it will be a cosier destination for trampers or hunters during the cooler months.
