Mt Brown Hut

Mt Brown Hut was built in 2010 by a volunteer group from Hokitika led by local builder Eddie Newman. His partner Julia Bradshaw was instrumental in organising the 'Kokatahi Tramping Group' and with foundation members of Permolat they came up with the plan to replace the old Mt Brown Hut on this spectacular location up on the tops.

The hut was managed by Permolat West Coast until 2024 when it was passed to the Backcountry Trust to own and manage. Today BCT work with the local Permolat group to see that this hut is run for the purpose for which it was originally built.

The cost to stay at this hut is currently a koha donation to the BCT which we then use to fund the maintenance of the hut with any yearly excess going to fund Permolat to do their great work on the huts and tracks in the Hokitika backcountry.

BCT are currently in the process of putting this hut onto the booking system to manage the visitor flow. The cost per night is yet to be confirmed and the revenue collected from this will continue to be distributed to maintaining Mt Brown Hut and to the work of the Permolat West Coast volunteers.

As well as paying your hut fees, if you would still like to make a donation to support the hard work of Permolat volunteers keeping the tracks open on the West Coast then you can do this directly following the instructions on this link:
